Patot diya Illish maach (Wrapped Illish)


  • Illish fish: 6 pieces
  • Mustard seeds: 1 ½ tbsps
  • Fenugreek seeds: 6
  • Dry red chilli: 1-2nos
  • Green chillies: 6
  • Garlic cloves: 4
  • Ginger: ½ inch piece
  • Mustard oil: 2 tbsps
  • Salt: to taste
  • Tender Pumpkin leaves 18
  • Plantain leaves: 6
  • For garnishing: mustard oil-1 ½ tbsps


    • Clean, wash and drain fish.
    • Soak the mustard seeds in a little water for 15 minutes.
    • Peel the garlic cloves and ginger. Wash.
    • Make a fine paste of the mustard seed, fenugreek seeds, dry chilli, garlic cloves and ginger with a little salt.
    • Wash and slit the green chillies.
    • Add the mustard paste with salt to the fish and mix well.
    • Take a plate. Put a plantain leaf. Place 3 pumpkin leaves at the centre.
    • Pour about 1 tsp of mustard oil in each piece. Place a green chilli at the centre.
    • Wrap each fish with the pumpkin leaves.
    • Make 6 parcels with plantain leaves and tie each with a string.
    • Heat a large griddle upon medium heat.
    • Cook the fish parcels turning occasionally.
    • When after 15 minutes it’s done switch off the gas.
    • Serve Mustard Illish with mustard oil, boiled rice and a dal.
